What to eat, what not to eat? Only mankind has this perennial problem. We are experimenting with different diets, follow many ‘experts’ hoping that we will get the needed guidance.
But let’s just look at nature. How do animals eat? Animals eat by instinct.
If you put a piece of meat in front of a deer it will not eat it even if hungry. Man with his intelligence or foolishness has made all kinds of substances as foods by modifications and we have started to eat all kinds of food with man-made modifications. Eating foods not natural to our species build up toxins in the body.
How to understand what is the right food? Lets understand our anatomy.
Our body structure shows that we are frugivorous. We are adapted to have mainly fruits, some vegetables (primarily tender greens), some nuts and seeds,
When we eat what we are designed for in as natural form as possible we enjoy the best health.
Having said that, this week we will look at dairy, meat, eggs which has come to become a part of our daily diet.
Milk (dairy products)
Milk is the primary food for infants till teeth begin to develop - after which they start eating solid foods
Every animal drinks the milk of its own species and that too of its own mother
Milk is a highly customized fluid designed by nature for its own offspring. in fact the quality and quantity of milk changes in composition every day as per the needs of the child.
Every animal is biologically designed to produce milk only during pregnancy and birth and it is for its own offspring.
Every animal drinks milk of its mother in unprocessed form directly from the mother’s body.
The body stops producing the necessary enzymes to break down the proteins in milk after around 3 years of age.
Cow’s milk is designed to grow a calf weighing 30 kgs at birth to 300 kgs in two years. Humans take 18 to 20 years to grow fully. It is a slow growth for humans as designed by nature.
These are the undeniable facts from nature.
How milk is being consumed today
We are consuming the milk of of another species , mainly cow (or buffalo) milk. This milk is designed to grow a calf rapidly to its fully mature form rapidly.
Cow milk composition is totally different from human milk composition
We are consuming dairy even into adulthood.
We are having milk in processed form. Milk is homogenized, pasteurized, curdled to make curds, concentrated into paneer or cheese
Milk is also artificially modified with pesticides, urea, even earth worms, artificial hormones and growth promoters
The higher we eat in the food chain, the more complex food becomes and the more toxins are present (bio-accumulation)
What about the health benefits?
We are designed to get our nutrients directly from heterotrophs i.e plants.. The plant kingdom has all that we need.. the protein, minerals like calcium, vitamins etc. We don’t have any need to get anything from animals
Dairy products are high fat, high protein foods with no fibre. Most modern day diseases are due to high fat, high protein, unnatural foods.
Most Indians (in fact East and South Asians, Latinos, Africans etc) are lactose intolerant and we don’t even know. This gives rise to various allergies, gastric issues, skin breakouts, asthma, migraines etc. The Times of India reports that 3 in 4 Indians are lactose intolerant.
Have we ever thought how a cow can give milk 365 days in a year. Is she happy to give away her milk for humans? Why only cow’s milk? Why not tiger milk? Is it because a cow is docile and we could domesticate her?
As mentioned before, there is no need to consume dairy in any form in adulthood. However, we have got used to using dairy products in daily life. So during the transition phase or occasionally, we can make use of alternatives.
You can opt to buy these alternatives from the supermarket – many of them now stock soya , almond , oat or coconut milks. Curd , cheese, butter alternatives are also available, These should be checked for their labels and should be bought only occasionally.
