Mud is supposed to be one of the best remedies for ailments and thus used as a means of alternative medicines. It relieves the body from internal congestion and enhances blood circulation. It is also used in cosmetology as it contains natural moistures.
Types of mud used for mud therapy:-
Medical mud can be divided into four basic types depending on physical and chemical properties:
-siltsulphide
-sapropelic
-peat
- hill mud
The other varieties of mud used for medical purpose are as follows
1. Moor mud
Moor mud has become popular lately. It is made from organic peat that has been compressed at the bottom of a bag. As gross as it might sound, it has some definite benefits. It contains minerals that have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to ease muscle and nerve pain, and it can also treat skin diseases.
2. Green clay
Green clay mud is green as a result of iron oxides and decomposed plant matter. It can work wonders on oily skin as it soaks up excess oils in the skin. It also mops up impurities in the skin, which is why it is an ingredient in many face masks. Being an anti-inflammatory, it can even help to treat conditions such as arthritis.
3. Dead Sea Mud:
Dead Sea mud this type of mud has the perfect combination of pure minerals that come directly from the depths of the ocean. Dead Sea mud contains calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and iodine. These ingredients all work together to revitalize and restore healthy skin cells, remove harmful substances and toxins from the skin, and improve overall appearance. All skin types can use this mud without any negative skin reactions.
The Healing Power of Dead Sea Mud
People visit the Dead Sea to benefit from the therapeutic powers of water and mud of the Dead Sea, which is the lowest point on earth (400 meters below sea level).
Cleopatra and Queen Sheba are known to have used Dead Sea black mud and salts, which contain more than 20 types of health giving minerals, for their relaxing and beautifying properties.
They are believed to be ideal for treating acne, eczema, psoriasis, athlete's foot and several other skin ailments. The most popular is the mud masque which helps to tighten pores and stimulate as well as nourish the skin for a radiant and more youthful appearance.
Coating the body with the Dead Sea black mud can provide relief from skin and physical ailments such as black spots, acne on the back, arthritis, muscle stiffness, chilblain and rheumatism. Facial masks are ideal for correcting blemishes, evening skin tone and achieving softer, smoother skin.
4. Kaolin Clay:
Kaolin clay this popular clay comes in three colours - white, yellow, and pink. Each colour has a specific purpose. White Kaolin, also known as China clay and white clay, is the most gentle of the three. Using this type of mud on the skin helps to cleanse, gently exfoliate, and stimulate blood circulation. Because it does not absorb the skin’s excess oils, White Kaolin is perfect for dry skin types. Pink Kaolin is gentle can be used by dry, sensitive and normal skin types and contains the same benefits as White Kaolin. Yellow Kaolin is a little bit stronger than the other two types of Kaolin mud but is still gentle enough for dry skin types and works to exfoliate and cleanse without removing excess oils.
5. Blue & Red Montmorillonite Clay
Perfect for oily skin types, Blue and Red Montmorillonite clay is very efficient in absorbing excess oils and removing harmful toxins from the skin. Because of its potent and intense purification properties, oily and other problematic skin types can benefit greatly from these two types of mud.
6. Moroccan Red Clay:
This special clay is found deep within the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Not only does this clay work as a tough cleanser, circulation booster, and detoxifier, but as a potent astringent as well. Moroccan Red clay should not be used by those with sensitive or dry skin types.
TYPES OF MUD APPLICATION
• By applying mud on the affected parts
• By mud bath
Mud Pack
Mud pack is very useful in pimples, boils, spots, patches and constipation. It reduces the temperature, cleans the skin tissue and improves the complexion of the face or body wherever applied.
The Mud Pack is prepared by the clay obtained from about 5 feet below the surface of earth, after ensuring that it does not contain any composite or any pebbles. The clay is then mixed with water and a paste is made out of it. This when cooled down is spread on a cloth which is then applied as per requirement of the treatment. The pack is applied for 10 to 30 minutes. This mode of treatment is normally adopted in conjunction with a proper scheme of dietary and other natural therapies
Benefits:
• Cooling of the affected part: the cooling effect of a mud pack is much greater than that of a wet water pack, it reduces the body temperature and is useful in high fever.
• Absorption of toxins: mud has a wonderful and unique property of absorbing the toxins from the body.
• Reduction of swelling: a clay pack reduces the swelling of any part of the body.
• Relaxation of tension: A clay pack reduces tension of the muscles and soothes over-stimulated nerves.
Mud Bath
In Mud Bath, the paste of the clay is applied to the entire body. A massage is done and when the clay gets dried up its washed off with cleansing water bath. In another method, the mud paste is spread on a sheet, which in turn is wrapped round the body. One or two blankets are then wrapped over this, is followed with a cleansing warm water bath and a short cold shower depending on the temperature of the room and that of the pack. Mud bath invigorates the circulatory system by diverting a large amount of blood to the periphery and hence useful in cleansing and strengthening the skin tissue. The Mud Bath is useful in getting temporary relief from rheumatic pain or pains caused by injuries or accidents. Usually the duration of the bath is from 20 to 30 minutes. (or) Mud bath can be taken by covering the whole body (except head) with clean mud or clay for 20-30 minutes. Clay can produce both cooling and warm effect on the body. If the mud pack or clay is covered well with a thick woollen or cotton cloth it will give warming effect and if it is left uncovered it will have a cooling effect on the applied body part.
