BACKGROUND
How is dealing with the virus affecting mental health?
A study by Lancet journal dated December 2019 states that 1 in 7 Indians were affected by mental disorders in 2017. The situation has only aggravated now. Mental health providers are reporting a huge spike in the daily number of cases they are dealing with. These numbers are alarming and indicate a global mental-health pandemic in the making. Dealing with societal, financial and personal repercussions of pandemic induced situations is disrupting our mental well being. Every intervention taken by humans to keep the pandemic at bay has an after-life, that is causing extreme stress to society at large.
How does stress and mental health affect our physical health?
Our thoughts and emotions manifest in physical symptoms, even illnesses. Fear, anger, anxiety, depression, happiness, and love - all of these emotions affect our body’s physiology, causing or relieving us of physical diseases. Around 80% of the physical diseases originate in the mind. Asthma, Heart disease, Skin disorders, Stomach ulcers, frequent cold & flu have roots in our mind. The phenomenon is known as psychosomatic illness. In addition to this, being in a constant state of ‘fight-or-flight’ (stress response), harms our heart, respiratory system and immune system.
What can we do to cope with mental stress and keep our bodies healthier?
We need to first understand the repercussions of our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and attitudes on our biological functioning. It is scientifically proven that the mind affects our physical health and can cause certain diseases to arise. We need to learn how to train our mind to keep itself at ease and maintain optimum physical health.
