How Nature Healed me from Thyroid, Cervical and Sciatic Pain

Chandra Chauhan was suffering from severe cases of thyroid, cervical pain and sciatic nerve pain. When medications provided no help, she turned to the power of nature. Now, she has successfully overcome the illnesses and is able to lead a fulfilling life. Her journey has been emotionally and physically challenging. Read on to know how she discovered nature’s cure and what she did to overcome her pains.

The Discovery of Health Issues

It was a happy time in my life, I was pregnant with my first child. In early 2015, I went for my regular checkup and was informed that I have thyroid. Being an expectant mother, I got worried for myself and my baby. Hoping to keep my thyroid levels under check I started medication immediately. It helped me sail through the pregnancy. However, the actual problem started post delivery.

The Battle Starts

It was a fight between caring for my newborn and battling with my own health issues. I had started to develop arthritic pain in the joints of my legs and arms. I developed unbearable pain in my wrists. To alleviate that wrist pain, I took two injections worth 2000 rupees each in both the arms but of not much avail. Lethargy took over my body. I could not be active enough to take care of my child or keep work-life balance. I also developed gastric issues of acidity and indigestion. 

I was already suffering from cervical pain which intensified during this stage and I also developed the crippling sciatic nerve pain in my left leg. 

The Breaking Point

On 13th June 2019 at 10pm, for the first time I felt vertigo. I was dizzy and felt tingling pain in the left side of my body. My husband rushed me to a nearby hospital where I was admitted for three days. 

Being around my son and having unpredictable incidents of dizziness was extremely scary for me. I was lost and convinced that there is something seriously wrong with my health. This mental and physical pain was traumatising me. I had broken down, I was frightened.

I consulted two doctors in two different hospitals. None of them were able to diagnose the problem. One of them said that it was false vertigo and started me on heavy doses of medication. But the dizziness episodes did not stop. In fact, because of medicines I used to be sleeping or drowsy all the time which worsened my condition.

That was when I developed grave anxiety. I became anxious about my life, my health, my son and our future. That’s when I decided that I will have to adopt a different approach to cure myself. 

First Step towards Natural Healing

I decided to visit a naturopathy therapist in my neighborhood. She advised me to consult her for at least  a month and offered to see me everyday for an hour. During my visits she instilled confidence in me that naturopathy, herbal medicines, massages and exercises can heal me. 

I had started to realise the power of nature on our bodies. The massages worked well for the sciatic nerve pain and my vertigo issues resolved to some extent. Because of my newly risen faith in natural healing, I had stopped taking allopathy pills for dizziness, cervical and arthritic pain but still continued with Thyroid controlling medicines. However, she continued to prescribe me some herbal medicines and I was not convinced with this approach. 

Meanwhile, I got my MRI scan done and was diagnosed with a Pinched nerve and Bulged disc in my neck. In early August 2019, I decided to end the ongoing treatment, stopped taking the herbal pills and visited my mother in Haldwani. 

The Turning Point

While I was staying with my mother, I stumbled upon the Youtube channels of Naturopathy expert Acharya Shri Mohan Gupta - The Natural Lifestyle and Subah Jain - The Satvic Movement. Through these channels I gained knowledge about natural ways to heal. I learned how our body is equipped with a robust defence mechanism, i.e., our immune system and how we need to provide the right weapons to it in the form of the right foods, to fight illnesses. In November 2019, I participated in an online workshop by Subah Jain (Satvic Movement) and that was when my holistic healing process took an upward turn. During the workshop I got in touch with a fellow participant Priyanka Kaushik, who later supported me immensely in my journey of natural healing. 

Taking inspiration from these experts, I decided to take charge of my own body and make some definitive changes in my lifestyle, diet and routine. 

The Therapy

I started making changes in my lifestyle from August 2019. 

  • I began with giving up animal and dairy products. Initially it was difficult and I cheated a few times by drinking milk or eating paneer. Gradually the cravings reduced and I could successfully wean myself off from those.

  • Starting my day with a glass of warm water, I initiated doing yoga in the morning  while sunbathing for about 40 minutes. 

  • This was followed by a glass of Petha juice (white ash gourd juice). 

  • My breakfast became a generous serving of fruits. 

  • Around noon, I started eating a bowl of salad made of seasonal vegetables

  • A simple lunch of roti or rice with dal followed. 

  • In the evening I drink a cup of homemade herbal tea of cinnamon, tulsi, mint or ginger. 

  • I started eating dinner before 8pm - a simple preparation of seasonal vegetables and roti. 

  • I started keeping a cold compress (wet cloth of cold water) on my neck and limbs post lunch and dinner. This helped me a lot in cervical, thyroid and even sciatic pain. 

  • During this period I slowly reduced dosage of my allopathy medicines. I brought it down from 100 mg to 25 mg gradually and then eventually stopped consuming them. 

I faltered at times in sticking to this diet and routine but I have been consistently following this routine since November 2019. 

The Impact

It has been a few months of following a new lifestyle which has completely cured me of sciatic nerve pain and thyroid. After stopping thyroid pills, I got a test done in April this year and the hormone value was in range. My cervical situation has also improved significantly. I feel more positive, active and maintain a calm state of mind throughout the day. 

I feel a bout of energy within me always. My problem of face acne and hair fall has disappeared. 

While I was fighting with health issues, I was also under immense financial stress because of life’s liabilities. I knew that I would not be able to quit my job but at the same time I was worried about continuing to work in those health conditions. However, now with a better physical and mental health I am looking forward to leading a happy and healthy life. 

The Change in Life

I have learnt that our health is in our own hands. Being negligent towards what and how we eat and how we conduct our bodies can have immense impact on our lives. I continue to follow the same routine and have progressed in yogic practices. I can now perform more than 30 surya namaskars in a go and many other asanas which I was not able to do earlier. I recently did a three day juice-fasting along with my husband.

How we heal and how we feel is completely up to us. It is only about taking that first step and keeping faith in the power of nature.
