Dates Pickle - Raw and Oil-Free!

Pickle is not always oily or salty. Try this dates pickle without oil.Dates soaked in lime juice with a mix of spices to enliven your taste buds.I like to just eat it after a meal. You can serve it with Indian breads or as a side dish with any meal.

  • Dates: 10-12
  • Ginger: 2 inch piece
  • Chilli powder: ¼ tsp
  • Black salt: ½ tsp
  • Jeera powder: ½ tsp
  • Saunf: ½ tsp
  • Lime juice: 3 tbsp
  • Remove the seeds of the dates and reserve two dates and cut the rest length wise as shown in the picture.Finelychop the reserved dates.

  • Peel and cut ginger into thin juliennes
  • Sun-dry saunf/ fennel seeds and crush them coarsely in a mortar and pestle.

  • Combine all the ingredients and taste to adjust seasonings. Store in a glass jar.
  • Mix it with a spoon every day.
  • In two or three days the lime juice will be absorbed by the dates and the pickle will be ready to taste.

  • Choose dates that are not too soft.
  • Seasoning will mostly depend on the sweetness of dates.
  • Try replacing red chilli powder with pepper.
