Instant Kambu dosa (Bajra or Pearl millet dosa)

Kambu (or known as Bajra in North India) is the most widely grown millet variety in India. It is easy to digest and high in nutrition – having almost 8 times the iron content found in polished rice. Add a nutritious variety to your dosas by using kambu instead of normal rice. The traditional method of making it is time consuming as it requires fermentation. When in a rush, try this no-fermentation version of making this dosa!


  • Kambu (or pearl millet) flour : 1.5 cup
  • Whole urad dal : 1/2 cup
  • Methi seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Salt as needed
  • Water as needed


  • Wash and soak urad dal and fenugreek for 4 hours. Grind it to a smooth and fluffy batter.
  • Mix bajra/kambu flour with needed water making sure that there are no lumps.
  • Add the ground urad dal mix and mix it well.
  • Adjust water to get a dosa flour consistency.
  • Add salt if needed.
  • Prepare just like you prepare regular dosa on a medium flame.

Make this dosa even healthier by adding shredded veggies like cabbage, carrots, onion, coriander leaves etc before flipping over.

Eating guide

  • Food group: Millets
  • Millets are gluten free, rich in fibre and high on nutritional value. They are a good option to add variety to your meals or when you want to go grain free. Have them in place of your regular rice dosas . Serve with Veg curry or chutney of choice.

Very nice recipe. When I make it at home for my kids, I make it thicker and spread some home made pizza sauce on top and thinly sliced vegetables. We call it a healthy pizza :)
